| Welcome 2010 marks the dawn of a new decade and already we are seeing signs of what’s in store for cable content creators, providers and consumers. 3-D technology, mobile media, and integrated marketing have come to define the order of the day, opening up a world of fresh new possibilities. In this environment of innovation, one of The Walter Kaitz Foundation’s missions is to provide a pipeline of diverse talent and ideas to help drive the bottom line for industry growth and sustainability. The 2010 Cable Show being held in Los Angeles May 11-13 will allow us to build the diversity pipeline with two of our proven programs that deliver training to young professionals and minority-owned businesses. We will also be launching a new program aimed at emerging writers, directors and producers of color. For our program participants, The Walter Kaitz Foundation is very much a part of their career growth, business development and organizational sustainability. For our supporters, our mission is to serve the needs of our diverse industry with quality programs that cable cares about. We take great pride in bridging these interests. As always, The Walter Kaitz Foundation needs and appreciates your continued investment and partnership. Your support has a critical impact on our ability to serve the cable community. We look forward to sharing news of the return on your investment in this and future editions of our quarterly newsletter. David Porter Executive Director IN THE NEWS: 1 Corporate Sponsors and Howard University’s SBEL Students Converge at Winter Retreat This past January over 110 students from Howard University’s School of Business Executive Leadership Honors Program attended the cable industry’s Corporate Retreat at the Time and Life Building’s Conference Center in New York, along with the Foundation and its 2009-2010 corporate sponsors: BET Networks, Scripps Networks, Sony Pictures and Time Warner Cable. Designed to acquaint students with each sponsoring company of the program, the event featured four panels, ranging in topics from digital media to career opportunities in the cable industry. The panels highlighted speakers from each sponsoring company and provided the occasion for the students to discuss trends in the cable industry as well as to interact with industry executives. In addition, some of the students attended a special screening of BET’s 106 & Park during the afternoon while others attended a closing reception with industry executives. “The program provides an academic curriculum that facilitates the introduction of the brightest business students to the cable industry’s most successful managers and executives and for that we take great pride,” says Michelle Ray, Senior Director of Programs & Strategic Initiatives at the Walter Kaitz Foundation. Ray added that “in an active and challenging learning environment, these students pursue a customized education that truly prepares them for success in their chosen field.” As part of the program, a case study competition was held and students were divided into teams comprised of 10 to 12 students. Each team was responsible for developing a paper designed to provide strategic advice to the senior management team of a cable operating company or a programming entity of their choice. Industry executives then reviewed the submitted papers and selected the top five teams. The five selected teams then made formal presentations on March 2nd at Howard University’s School of Business in front of a select panel of cable industry executives from Scripps Networks, Sony Electronics and Time Warner Cable. The judges then selected the top three teams who will be announced and awarded monetary scholarships at the school’s annual SBEL Awards Banquet taking place on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Howard University. Through this unique program, the Foundation has sought to encourage highly qualified, well-trained, African-American students to build relationships with the cable industry through sessions, networking events and internships – all of which may ultimately lead to employment after graduation. 2 NATPE Diversity Fellows to Join an All-Star Cast at The Cable Show The 2010 Cable Show marks the first time that program participants from the National Association of Television Programming Executives (NATPE) Diversity Fellowship Program have been invited to attend the NCTA’s Cable Show. “It came about primarily because a lot of the diversity fellows are West Coast-based,” says David Porter, Executive Director of the Walter Kaitz Foundation. “This year the Cable Show will be in L.A., so we thought it would be an obvious connection to bring together diversity fellows based on the West Coast with attendees at the Cable Show which will have a significant emphasis on the content and production side of the cable industry.” NATPE’s Diversity Fellowship Program, sponsored in part by the Walter Kaitz Foundation, is currently in its fourth year. The program serves as the provider of enhancement opportunities for emerging television and video content creators of diverse backgrounds. Participants, grouped by their interest in scripted or nonfiction programming, are paired with mentors who help them navigate through workshops, networking engagements, and pitch meetings, such as those experienced at the 2010 NATPE conference this past January in Las Vegas. “We did structured, enhanced meeting confirmations where we paired the fellows with someone they were interested in meeting in the industry that also matched what the industry person might be looking for,” NATPE Marketing Director, Beth Braen explains. “We prepared them for those meetings with the help of the mentors and refined their pitch and presentation to make the most of that meeting, which was the key thing they did at NATPE and will do at The Cable Show in May.” “It’s a partnership that we’ve developed over the last few years in which we’ve built on the work that NATPE had done to identify young, aspiring writers and producers of color and help introduce them to what is necessary in order to be able to develop careers in the industry,” Porter adds. “I think that the partnership has been great in that it has allowed each of the two organizations to pool together to develop a program that will have a significant impact on the diversity of the people we see on the air or driving content on the internet.” NATPE Diversity Fellows will benefit from the educational sessions, massive exhibit floor access and networking events that are a part of the 2010 Cable Show. The 2009 show drew 287 companies with more than 12,200 attendees and this year promises to be just as vibrant. Be sure to visit www.natpe.org for more information on the Diversity Fellowship Program and www.thecableshow.com for The Cable Show schedule and related information about the program. 3 Programs at The Cable Show The Walter Kaitz Foundation will have an increased presence at the 2010 Cable Show in Los Angeles, May 11-13. This is the first year that all three pillars of the Foundation’s diversity mission to diversify cable’s workforce, suppliers and content creators, will be addressed in one venue. New this year is Cable Day: The Hollywood Creative Forum which encompasses a full day of sessions and “meet and greets” focused on programming and producers of creative content. The 11th Annual Supplier Diversity Connection Workshop will provide its signature offerings of invaluable insight and information for growing diverse business enterprises wanting to do business within the cable industry. Finally, the Millennials Master Class is back due to its overwhelming success in its inaugural last year with its focus on introducing high-potential college students to cable industry executives. Though each day’s topic is different in scope, the ultimate mission is aimed at broadening the reach of diversity and its impact on distinctive sectors of the cable industry. Cable Day: The Hollywood Creative Forum Tuesday, May 11, 2010 The Creative Forum is an all-encompassing day of activities aimed at a diverse and emerging spectrum of writers, directors and producers, collectively known as “creatives.” This inaugural program will feature sessions designed to advance the skills and knowledge base of emerging creatives through self-promotion, the utilization of cable access as a creative vehicle for developing production expertise and honing skills to pitch content. It will also provide an opportunity for more experienced content providers to “meet and greet” programming executives in the cable industry. Cable Cares About Diversity: Millennials Master Class Wednesday, May 12, 2010 This day features the return of a unique session where partnerships are formed among member companies within the industry to encourage high-potential college students, representing multi-ethnic backgrounds, in their pursuit of careers in the cable industry. What results is a one-of-a-kind experience called the Millennials Master Class, an engaging event where a group of talented students receive insider’s knowledge by joining with influential cable executives for a day of learning, inspiration and coaching. Participants are able to receive firsthand insight into the cable industry and its opportunities, as well as exposure to interpreting business trends that will essentially shape strategies in the decade ahead. This singular program grants participating companies access to a high-caliber and diverse talent pool of Millennials for potential internships and hiring opportunities. 11th Annual Supplier Diversity Connection Workshop Thursday, May 13, 2010 The Walter Kaitz Foundation’s National Supplier Diversity Initiative was designed to connect the cable industry with members of the minority and women-owned business community. These relationships contribute to customer loyalty, stimulate business development and tap into the innovation and entrepreneurship that the industry needs in order to win in a competitive marketplace. The Foundation created this one-day, complimentary workshop featuring sessions and speakers geared towards Women and Minority Business Enterprises (WMBEs) and procurement officers and other commodity professionals interested in improving supplier diversity in their company’s supply chain management process. 4 Empire State of Mind: Preparations Underway for the Walter Kaitz Foundation’s 27th Annual Fundraising Dinner The 27th Annual Walter Kaitz Foundation Fundraising Dinner is returning to the Big Apple this fall. This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, September 15 at the Hilton New York as part of Cable Diversity Week. Considered the centerpiece of the cable industry’s diversity activities each fall, the Foundation’s Annual Fundraising Dinner celebrates and honors extraordinary achievement in diversity. For over 26 years, the Walter Kaitz Foundation has highlighted the achievements of individuals and organizations in the cable industry that have made a commitment to diversity by embracing it as part of their business practices. Previous honorees have included MTV Networks, ESPN and Comcast Corporation as champions for diversity in addition to advocates of diversity such as Representative Hilda L. Solis (D-CA) and Representative Edolphus Towns (D-NY). “Each year at the dinner, the Foundation focuses on themes that reflect the current attitude of its constituents and provide a message that emboldens the industry,” says Michelle Ray, Senior Director of Programs & Strategic Initiatives, “and this year is no different. We are currently in the throes of early planning and preparations for the event, including the announcement of the Dinner Committee and Co-Chairs,” says Ray. Other activities for Diversity Week are also being planned by the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC), Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT), the Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) along with The Walter Kaitz Foundation. Event updates will be posted on www.walterkaitz.org so continue to check for the latest information on honorees, ticket sales and sponsorships opportunities. 5 Walter Kaitz Foundation Online Career Center One of the newer features of the Walter Kaitz Foundation’s website is the Kaitz Career Center — an online job board — designed to serve as the cable industry’s resource for making online employment connections and recruiting qualified cable industry professionals. The Kaitz Career Center helps streamline the hiring process of participating companies by offering employers targeted access to talented cable industry professionals, in addition to serving as a quick and easy process for job posting. Many employers and job seekers today are aware of the advantages of searching online for industry jobs and qualified candidates to fill them. However, mega job boards may not be the best way to find qualified women and multi-ethnic professionals for any given company. As cable’s diversity advocate, the Walter Kaitz Foundation created the Kaitz Career Center to give employers targeted access to talented cable industry professionals of diverse backgrounds. Companies in the cable industry are encouraged to take advantage of the on-line job board as it offers a plethora of FREE services to members which include: Easy Online Job Management – You can enter job descriptions, check the status of postings, renew or discontinue postings, all free of charge to member companies. Job Activity Tracking – Your online account will include reports that show the number of individuals that have viewed your posted jobs, applied online, and even how many times your job was sent out in a “job agent” or “emailed to a friend.” You’ll see at a glance how effective your ad is. Auto Notification – Set the criteria for your ideal job candidate and our system will email you when new resumes are a match. No more time wasted visiting the site every day to see new candidates. Bulk Posting – a convenient and automated way to post multiple jobs at once. Company Awareness – The Kaitz Career Center can be a great venue for promoting your company. Along with each job posting, you can include information about your company, your corporate logo, a Google Map to your location and a link to your website.
